Press release for the 17th Annual Chicago Food Justice Summit

Blog post by Saadhana Deshpande. Saadhana was a part of the 4th class of Zero Hunger Interns with the Congressional Hunger Center and was placed with the Chicago Food Policy Action Council. They are originally from the East Bay and have previously worked in a food pantry at U.C. Berkeley.

Now that the General Legislative session has ended, we’ve worked with Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Illinois Environmental Council, Illinois Public Health Institute Alliance for Health Equity, and Greater Chicago Food Depository to compile all of the food related legislative wins! All of the following pieces of legislation are headed to Governor Prizker’s desk to be signed into law.

We’re excited to release the 2020 annual Good Food Purchasing Initiative progress report! This year was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but despite this we were still able to accomplish a great deal.

We’re excited to share the City has officially announced it’s plans to initiate the first ever Food Equity Council! Below is their press release detailing more information. To see the original press release, please click here.

HB3404 is a bill that would create a guaranteed contract to Nicor Gas to build natural gas infrastructure in Pembroke Township. We know it’s crucial we make a transition to renewable energy. This bill goes to hearing tomorrow, Thursday May 20th, and we need your support!

To keep urban agriculture and the local food system thriving in Chicago, access to affordable water is critical.
