This paper outlines the vision to create urban farming communities to bring food security to communities in need of healthy food, provide jobs and education for neighborhood residents, revitalize local economies, and establish Chicago as a leader in the urban farming movement.

Urban Agriculture Zoning Amendment (2011)

Approved by City Council September 2011, this zoning code amendment outlined the definitions, rules and regulations for urban farms and community gardens in Chicago.

The Chicago Community Trust Food System Report (2009)

The Food Systems report was developed by the Chicago Food Policy Advisory Council and City of Chicago Department of Zoning and Planning in collaboration with an advisory committee. The report is commissioned by The Chicago Community Trust to support the 2040 comprehensive regional planning effort led by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

Chicago’s Food Plan: A Recipe for Healthy Places (2013)

In 2011, over 400 Chicagoans - including representatives from diverse public, private and non-profit organizations - worked together to create Chicago’s Food Plan and develop strategies to that will help address obesity and build a healthier food culture in our city.

GO TO 2040 Plan (2010)

Created in 2010 by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, the official regional planning organization for the northeastern Illinois counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will, GO TO 2040 is the comprehensive regional plan to help the seven counties and 284 communities plan together for sustainable prosperity through mid-century and beyond.

INNOVATION FUNDS

The Chicago Food Policy Action Council (CFPAC) is seeking GOOD IDEAS about how to support and promote local food production, processing, and distribution. Through a grant from the Community and Regional Food Systems project, we will be able to provide materials and services for selected ideas. Issues we’re particularly interested in include:
